The course consists of the following: pre study time, one week of obligatory lectures, minimum 21 hours of practical training, revision and study time before examination, 2 hours written examination; total amount of course work is a minimum of 80 hours. The course, starting with the pre course study and finishing with the examination is spread over a 6 week continuous period including one week attendance at NVH.

Aims and objectives:
The Aims are to teach the participants the basics of laboratory animal science which includes biology, handling, anesthesia/analgesia, euthanasia, health monitoring, infections, design of studies, ethics, humane endpoints etc. 

Practical training:
The participants will have to undertake a minimum of 21 hours of practical training supervised by a named Veterinary Surgeon, working with laboratory animals. Each participant is personally responsible for finding a suitable supervisor that is willing to provide the obligatory minimum of 21 hours training. If necessary it is possible to arrange for practical training at NVH. Guidelines for the training will be provided after the registration deadline.

Preliminary programme

Examination:
The course will finish with a two hour exam on June 12th at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science. The participants are expected to spend time revising for the exam and the practical training must be carried out and completed before the examination.

Dinner
